Call for an explanation regarding the change of the department-based recruitment system
Several students from the department of music reported, on last Friday, that the administration alerted the student from the music society of the new arrangement in new students' recruitment in the following year. The new plan is to allocate the freshmen into all college rather than the current practice of only into the Chung Chi College. The department and the Chung Chi College claimed that they were not informed of such a decision made. The Student Union of CUHK pays great attention in this regard. As far as the latest update on this matter, this arrangement extends to the Chung Chi Theology Department, New Asia Fine Arts Department, New Asia Anthropology Department, etc. The reason the administration claim is to allow faculties to implement faculty-based admission under the 3+3+4 academic reform rather than the department-based admission. After this dramatic change in rrangement, the influence of various departments will be diminished, to the extent of consolidating some departments into one. The Student Union is paying its regret to the administration for its usual tactics of alerting students at the end of a term in the hope of having less rebound from the students.
This sudden change of policy does not affect one or two department in CUHK but it relates to the general direction the university is heading towards after the 3+3+4 academic reform has formally implemented in Hong Kong. As for that, all stakeholders should be able to be informed and understood regarding the new plan. The Student Union is demanding an explanation from the administration in terms of the reason of not consulting the faculty, college, staff and students before the implementation.
