中大學生會就校方禁止擺放新民主女神像聲明

《中大學生會就校方禁止擺放新民主女神像聲明》
6月2日晚，校方發公開信，以「政治中立」為由拒絕本會要求，把新民主女神像擺放於中大，本會對此深感憤怒！
校方聲稱擺放民主女神於中大會損害「大學政治中立的原則」，然而，政治中立的真意是，正如校方的聲明指出，讓「所有大學成員享有表達不同見解和持有不同立場的自由」。可是，如今，校方卻自打嘴巴地禁止學生於校內擺放民主女神像紀念六四，限制學生表達意見的自由，禁制異議聲音，明顯有違校方所高舉的言論自由和政治中立原則！而且，若按校方標準，即任何「行動或活動反映政治立場」都屬有損「大學政治中立的原則」的話，那麼，光是頒贈榮譽博士予董建華和唐英年﹑劉遵義任行政會議成員和全國政協委員就已經違反了所謂的「中立原則」。校方自相矛盾﹑雙重標準之荒謬顯然易見!此先例一開，日後恐怕會有更多以「政治中立」為由限制校內不同政見的表達自由，使大學兼容並包、思想百花齊放的精神淪喪！
大學作為社會的良心，理應肩負維護社會正義的責任！六四廿一周年之際，本會提出在校內擺放象徵八九民運精神的新民主女神像，就是要喚起同學對六四真相的關注，並承擔起推動民主的歷史使命！然而，校方無視大學作為社會良心之責任，反而主動屈服於強權之下，向滿手血腥的中共獻媚，以荒謬的藉口泯滅大學的獨立精神和良知，使大學淪為政權附庸！再者，維護歷史真相﹑民主人權這些普世價值是對良知的堅守，校方豈能以所謂的「政治中立」將之抹殺？因此，本會強烈要求校方：
一、撤回昨日的聲明並作出道歉；
二、無條件讓六四雕塑在校內擺放，不得阻撓
本會呼籲同學出席六四廿一周年悼念晚會，並在完畢後，回到大學火車站外空地，參與矗立新民主女神像的儀式，毋忘六四!

Statement on the CUHK Administration Refusal regarding the Settlement of the new Goddess of Democracy Statue
On the night of June 2nd, the CUHK Administration released a letter to all colleges, faculties, staff members, students, and alumni, stating their position as “politically neutral”, refusing to allow the new Goddess of Democracy Statue to be settled in the CUHK campus. The Student Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong expresses its indignation in this matter.
The principle of political neutrality, as stated by the Administration, has to be preserved against any possibility that might impair this principle; however, the true meaning and understanding of political neutrality, as stated in the Administration’s official press release, “to respect and defend the freedom of all members of the University to express different opinions and to hold different positions”. As we can observe now, the Administration is in contradiction with its own words when it refused to arrange a place for the new Goddess of Democracy Statue in remembrance of the June 4th Incident as a mean to limit the students’ freedom of expression. Moreover, in accord with the standard of the Administration, if “any action or event reflects political stand” might harm the “principle of political neutrality,” then the conferment of honorary degree to Tung Chee-Hwa and Henry Tang Ying-yen, the Vice Chancellor Lawrence Lau’s service of being the member of the Executive Council, HKSAR and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, PRC are the stone-hard evidence to show the inconsistency in the words and actions of the CUHK Administration. The Student Union does not wish to see this precedent to be set in place as a weapon by the Administration to control and censor any political expression in the cost of sacrificing the spirit of compatibleness of allowing all forms of opinions to be free in the campus of CUHK.
A university, being the social conscience in a community, has a responsibility to preserve, protect and defend the social justice. In this 21st Anniversary of the June 4th Incident, the Student Union requests to settle the new Goddess of Democracy Statue, which symbolizes the spirit of the 1989 Civil Movement, in the CUHK campus. We hope to call for the attention and interest of our CU students on the facts of the June 4th Incident, and take up the historical mission of advancing democracy in China. It is heartbreaking that our own university treating our request with total indifference, disregarding its own social conscience and surrendering to the bigwigs and sacrificing our conscience with a ridiculous excuse.
As such, the Student Union demands the Administration to take the following actions:
1. Retract the Press Release Statement on June 2nd 2010 and make a public apology to all members of the university; and
2. Unconditionally allow the June 4th Sculptures to be settled in the CUHK campus with no interference.
The Student Union call upon our fellow schoolmates to attend the Candlelight Vigil for June 4 Massacre, and return to CUHK after the ending of the vigil to witness the installment of the new Goddess of Democracy Statue.
